Study Tips For College Students – Get Equipped

Getting Science by Brian Clegg targets an audience of elementary school teachers who feel less than confident about teaching science in their classrooms. While I am not in his target audience, I’m close to it. (I love science and teach in small groups of homeschooled students.) Clegg did some things authors should do. He caught my attention, told me stuff I needed to read or wanted to learn, and kept my attention throughout the book. I learned a bit and further solidified prior knowledge. It’s a good book, and after reading this it, I hope many primary school teachers do read it.

Create/ Join unique Science activities. You can create activities that your kid will surely enjoy, but will still give him or her lessons about Science. You can have the Supermarket Science day where you will bring your kids to the Supermarket and teach them about proper nutrition by teaching them to select good foods for the body. You can create Saturday picnics in a nature spot and have a subtle lesson about taking care of the environment. You can also enroll your child in kid’s Science camps that are usually offered by schools and other organizations.

Supplement the lecture with hands- on experience. This generation is lucky because the society is recognizing their need for other learning tools. Lectures no longer stand alone. This should be followed- up with experiential learning.

Science has extended the horizons of human knowledge. It has added immensely to man’s capacity for work. By doing away with distance science has brought man closer to man. The East has now met the West. Who could have imagined that one day we would be able to sit at a table in Tokyo and have conservation with a friend or a relative in Germany? While sitting at home you can watch or listen to what is happening around the globe.

I grew up with Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton as role models, who not only could get out there and play with the boys, but also outlive the boys. Not to mention the many other women I could give shout outs to such as Claudia Christian inBabylon 5 and Nana Visitor and Terry Farrell in Deep Space Nine- all of which have played characters that have helped influence who I am today. And this is all before Joss Whedon came along to bring us a series about a certain vampire slayer.

I’ve found in my research that people who are less popular are fully capable of assuming these same traits, but they actually don’t realize that they prefer not to. Take the stereotypical nerd for example. Most nerds desperately want to be popular, but the one thing they value more than popularity, is being smart (and being seen as smart). Nerds have an unconscious belief that being popular will prevent them from being smart, and they sabotage their own chances at being popular. If you want to become popular at school, you have to untangle these conflicting motivations and start cultivating the traits of a popular person.
